Salon ERP vs POS, explained.

By Hamza Sajid, founder of VantaReach Technologies · Updated July 2026

A salon POS handles checkout: payments, receipts, staff attribution. A salon ERP contains a POS and everything around it: payroll and commissions, inventory, client retention, financial reporting and multi-branch management, in one system with one login.

Most salons start with a POS or a booking app, then bolt on spreadsheets for payroll, notebooks for stock and memory for retention. An ERP (enterprise resource planning system) replaces the bolt-ons: one database where a sale simultaneously updates revenue, the stylist's commission, product consumption and the client's visit history. That single-database property is why ERPs end disputes and reveal leaks that scattered tools hide. VantaReach is a salon ERP: the POS is one module of six.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small salon need an ERP?
A one-chair salon can start with POS-level features and grow into payroll and inventory. The advantage of starting on an ERP is never migrating data later; plans like VantaReach Starter price this the same as a basic POS.
Is an ERP harder to use?
Not inherently. Salon-native ERPs hide the complexity; staff see the same fast checkout while the system handles the rest.
